Localization

What exactly is website localization?

Website localization is the process through which a website is adapted to make it linguistically and culturally suitable to a target market. For this process to be effective, it is essential to have a solid understanding of the linguistic and cultural elements of a region or country. If this input is incorrect or missing, the website will not be properly localized. Here are some examples of the types of cultural differences that may make or break your website.

Did you know that online, people are 3 times more likely to buy if the website offering products or services is in their own language?

What can localization do for my business?

The professional localization of your website will allow you to reach new markets and target new customers more effectively. As potential clients browse your site, and they see that you took the trouble to communicate with them in their own language, they’ll be more open to do business with you. All of the information they need will be presented in their own language, in easy to understand terms. Showing that you are sensitive to their culture will give you credibility, and you’ll earn your new clients’ trust and respect.

Why can’t I just use machine translation or translation software?

Machine translation is useful for those who seek to comprehend something that was originally written in a foreign language, but it by no means produces a polished, professional-looking translation. In fact, translating your website with free translation software is detrimental to your business; it will impact negatively on your image, thus making your business suffer for it. Why would you take this risk? The money you save by using free translation software will, in all likelihood, be lost when you have to pay someone to “fix” your messy translation. Moreover, machine translation is not sensitive to cultural differences, thus placing you at risk of offending potential clients.

CommBridge Language Services provides the translation and localization services you need to move forward into new target markets and grow your business. Let us help you Bridge the Communication Barrier and gain the clients you seek – for life.

Editing & Proofreading

Our translation process includes the editing and proofreading of your documents by a second linguist at no additional cost. However, we also provide proofreading and editing services for translations provided by other sources- a translation agency, a freelance translator, a member of your staff or a friend. Our professional proofreading and editing services will ensure that you obtain the most linguistically and grammatically correct translation possible.

Although the terms are usually used interchangeably, keep in mind that editing and proofreading are two different things that involve a different process and different techniques.

Editing Services

Editing services involve an in-depth review of the translated text by comparing a translation with its original text. In the process, we check for accuracy, potential cultural problems, consistency, vocabulary, and style. We also check for spelling, grammar, and make sure that nothing has been omitted, may be ambiguous or may lead to misunderstanding in the translation. We verify tables, figures, numbers, names, abbreviations, spacing, metric conversions, etc. An editor may also suggest changes to improve the text.

Proofreading Services

Unlike editing, proofreading services are performed by reading and analyzing the translation by itself. The proofreader will check for analysis of content, organization, coherence, tone, and style of text, as well as spelling, grammar, punctuation, and capitalization errors.

Some of our past and present clients editing and proofreading projects include:

Businesses: editing and/or proofreading of reports, memos, manuals, marketing materials, press releases, and other business documents

Student or academic: editing and/or proofreading of essays, term papers, dissertations or journal articles, and admissions essays or proposals.

Authors:  editing and/or proofreading of books, short stories, plays, screenplays or poetry, or other manuscript services.

Personal documents: editing and/or proofreading of resumes, letters, e-mails, or other materials.

FAQs

Wouldn’t using spell check be as efficient?

Unfortunately, spell check can only help you eliminate obvious errors. However, spell check does not know the difference between to and tooits and it’sthere and theirwood and would because it does not take context into account, it cannot tell whether your tone should be formal or informal, it doesn’t know when you’ve wondered off from your point, etc.

Do we need to completely re translate our site to a new locale?

Not at all. In fact, one of the reasons you might want to use editing services is to have a linguist adapt the already translated text to a particular local market. There’s no need to spend on translation twice.

What are your editing and proofreading prices?

Prices vary according to language combination, length of the project, and time allowed. However, please refer to our estimated price sheet for prices.

Cultural Consulting

Understanding the need to become aware and to be sensitive to cultural differences is a key factor while dealing with translations. To be succesful in your marketing efforts whie trying to sell your products or services in a new market, you need to keep in mind that what works in one culture may not work -or even inappropriate -in another culture.

In order to reach your potential customers you need to speak their language. Did you know that people are 3 times more likely to buy if your marketing efforts are in their own language? But, that is not all! You also need to understand the cultural, political, linguistic and social aspects of your targeted market.Did you know, for instance, that in Mexico it is considered rude to send an invitation to an event that includes the time the event ends? Your guests will likely be offended and might even not attend your party! Or, did you know that in Japan the color white represents mourning? And, keep in mind that the brochure that works in the U.S. might not be successful in conveying your message in a foreign market.

There are several examples of businesses not succeeding because of their lack of awareness of cultural differences.

It is estimated that more than half of all international business expansions fail within two or three years because of lack of cultural competency.

While expanding your business to new markets, you might need to adapt the strategy of your communication. At CommBridge Language Services we’re committed to contribute to the success of your business. We will help you bring your message across in a culturally and linguistically proper way.
